Health Promotion is one of the disciplines in the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program. It focuses on providing education and interactive activities related to nutrition, hydration, sun safety, bone health, physical activity, and tobacco avoidance—all tailored to individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). The goal is to empower athletes with the knowledge and tools to lead healthier lives both on and off the field.
Role: As a Health Promotion Volunteer, you’ll engage directly with athletes, using fun, hands-on activities to share information about healthy habits. You’ll help create a welcoming, interactive space where athletes can learn, ask questions, and receive free health resources and giveaways.
Responsibilities: Lead or assist with educational activities and games related to healthy living topics (e.g., hydration, food groups, exercise) Communicate health messages clearly and positively to athletes of all ability levels Distribute giveaways such as water bottles, sunscreen, and healthy snacks Support athletes in setting simple health goals Encourage participation and ensure a fun, respectful experience for all Qualifications: Background or interest in public health, nutrition, health education, or a related field Comfortable working with individuals with intellectual disabilities in an inclusive setting Friendly, enthusiastic, and able to communicate clearly and patiently Experience with health fairs or education is helpful, but not required
