Healthy Hearing is the audiology discipline of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program. It provides free hearing screenings, education, and follow-up referrals to athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID). Many athletes experience hearing issues that go undetected—Healthy Hearing helps identify these concerns and connects athletes to the care they need to thrive in sports, school, work, and daily life.

Role: As a Healthy Hearing Volunteer, you’ll work with a team of audiologists and students to perform basic hearing screenings, educate athletes and caregivers, and assist with referrals for further evaluation when necessary. Your role helps ensure that every athlete has the chance to hear—and be heard.

Responsibilities: Conduct hearing screenings using otoscopy, tympanometry, and pure-tone audiometry following Healthy Hearing protocols Assist in identifying hearing concerns and providing follow-up recommendations Educate athletes and caregivers on ear health, hearing protection, and the importance of regular hearing checks Record screening results and help athletes feel comfortable and supported throughout the process Contribute to a fun, inclusive, and respectful event atmosphere

Qualifications: Licensed Audiologists or Audiology Students (2nd year and above preferred) Interest in inclusive health and serving individuals with intellectual disabilities Strong communication and interpersonal skills Experience in community health or outreach settings is a plus, but not required
