Who We Are

Special Olympics mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. In Maine we serve over 5000 athletes and offer 70+ events year round at the local, state, national and international levels.

What We Do

Special Olympics Maine's "Central Maine Counties" Program provides services for Athletes living in Maine's Central Counties. Volunteer opportunities are available at sporting events, in our office, at fundraising events and more. If you have a large group interested in doing a service project we are happy to work together to find the right fit!

While we are a sporting organization, specific knowledge of the sport you may be volunteering for is not required. We have a variety of opportunities at events like score keeping, coaching, referring, partnering (playing alongside athletes), set up and break down, awards, registration, concessions/ food service and more. We are committed to setting volunteers up for success and will provide any necessary training so that everyone attending an event feels confident!

The following sports are offered in Southern Maine: Alpine (downhill) skiing, Athletics (track and field), basketball, bocce, bowling, candlepin bowling, cross country skiing, equestrian, flag football, floor hockey, golf, motor activities training program, sailing, snowshoeing, soccer, softball, speed skating, swimming, tennis and young athletes (children ages 2-7).
