Join Special Olympics Maine as a volunteer for Fit Feet, a critical component of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program. Fit Feet provides free podiatric screenings and education to athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID), helping identify foot and ankle issues that may impact mobility, balance, and overall health.

Role: As a Fit Feet Podiatry Volunteer, you will work alongside other healthcare professionals to conduct basic foot exams, assess gait and footwear, and provide foot health education. You’ll help ensure athletes are referred to appropriate follow-up care when necessary, empowering them to move comfortably and safely in both sport and daily life.

Responsibilities: Conduct foot and ankle assessments under the Fit Feet screening protocol Identify common concerns such as deformities, skin/nail conditions, or improper footwear Educate athletes, caregivers, and coaches on foot hygiene and injury prevention Record screening results and assist with referral recommendations if follow-up care,  Work collaboratively with a team of volunteers in a supportive, inclusive environment

Qualifications: Licensed Podiatrist or Podiatric Resident/Student (3rd or 4th year preferred) Interest in working with individuals with intellectual disabilities Ability to communicate with compassion, patience, and clarity Previous experience with Special Olympics or community health screenings is a plus
